Block

Cmu Calculator

Standard block covers 8 by 16 inches of wall. That is 1.125 blocks per square foot, before waste and before you cut for openings.

For standard 8×8×16 nominal concrete block. Measure the wall face, then subtract openings.

5%

Quick answer

Cmu Calculator: standard 8×8×16 blocks cover 1.125 blocks per ft². Mortar ≈ 1 bag of 80 lb per 14 blocks at ⅜ in joints. Full-cell grout ≈ 0.25 ft³ per block. Round blocks up; add waste for cuts.

Worked example with the cmu calculator

160 ft² × 1.125 = 180 blocks exact → 189 with 5% → mortar ceil(189/14) = 14 bags. A 3×7 ft door removes 21 ft² ≈ 24 blocks before waste — subtract openings before you apply the cut percentage.

CMU vs poured walls

This is a masonry takeoff. For solid poured concrete between forms, use the wall calculator. Reinforced CMU needs a drawing for bar, grout schedule, and bond beams — Concrete Calculator’s grout option is a quantity hint, not a structural design.

Limits

Half-height and specialty units change the blocks-per-square-foot factor. Confirm the unit size on the delivery ticket. Corner returns and bond beams may need extra units beyond a flat-wall formula.

CMU calculator takeoff details

A CMU calculator for standard 8×8×16 units uses 1.125 blocks per square foot of wall face. That assumes modular layout with common joint thickness. Half-height units, specialty bond beams, and scored faces change counts — adjust after you know the unit on the ticket.

Cinder block calculator searches in the US usually want the same modular takeoff. Mortar bags scale with block count; grout scales with cells you actually fill. Reinforced walls need a drawing for which cells get grout — do not grout every cell “just in case” without a reason and a volume plan.

Openings, waste, and footings

Subtract door and window area before waste. Then add 5% for cuts on a straight wall, more on heavy-bonded patterns. The footing under the wall is poured concrete — size it on the footing calculator, not by inventing extra blocks.

Mortar and grout planning

Mortar bags track block count. Grout tracks cells you fill. A fully grouted wall uses far more material than a mortar-only veneer takeoff. If the engineer grouts every cell, budget volume for it; if only reinforced cells are filled, count those cells from the drawing.

How many CMU blocks do I need for 200 ft²? 200 × 1.125 = 225 exact, then waste for cuts. That is the CMU calculator core before mortar.

Before you call the plant

Write the neat volume, the waste percent, and the rounded order on one line. Dispatchers prefer a single clear quantity over a story about how you measured the forms.

If a drawing sets thickness, cover, or mix strength, those details override any online default. This page is for planning quantity — not for designing the section.
