Tons to Cubic Yards

Tons to Cubic Yards — clear numbers you can take to the plant or the bag aisle.

Quick answer

Tons to Cubic Yards: yards = tons ÷ (tons per yard). Concrete ≈ 2.025 ton/yd³ (so ≈0.49 yd³ per ton). Crushed stone ≈ 1.5 ton/yd³ (≈0.67 yd³ per ton). Pea gravel ≈ 1.35 ton/yd³.

  • Pea gravel ~1.35 ton/yd³
  • Bank gravel / crushed concrete ~1.4
  • Crushed stone ~1.5
  • Normal concrete ~2.025

Tons to Cubic Yards: Why 1:1 fails

A ton is weight. A yard is volume. Wet gravel, dry gravel, and concrete do not share a factor. Quarries publish different numbers — confirm before you settle a delivery dispute.

Worked example with the tons to cubic yards

12×50×4 in gravel = 7.41 yd³ ≈ 11.1 tons crushed stone neat, ≈12.8 tons with 15% compaction extra. Run it on the gravel calculator.

Concrete tons

Use the weight calculator when you started from volume. For “how many yards in a ton of concrete,” divide 1 ÷ 2.025 ≈ 0.49 yd³.

Ready-mix truck batching wet concrete for delivery
At 150 lb/ft³, one cubic yard of concrete is about 2.0 short tons.

Quick conversion pairs

10 tons crushed stone ≈ 6.7 yd³ at 1.5 ton/yd³. 10 tons concrete ≈ 4.9 yd³ at 2.025 ton/yd³. 5 yd³ crushed stone ≈ 7.5 tons. Keep the material name next to the number when you text the quarry — “5 yards” and “5 tons” are different trucks.

Concrete vs gravel on the same ticket

A ton of each is not the same yardage. Label every conversion with the material. Concrete Calculator’s gravel presets and concrete weight density exist so those labels stay attached to the number.

Field notes to keep handy

Measure to the outside of the forms. Convert every side to the same unit before you multiply. Apply waste after you sum every piece of the job, then round once for the plant.

Bag counts always round up because a partial bag is still a whole bag at the store. Compare that total with a delivered price when short-load fees show up on the quote.

Normal-weight planning density here is 150 pounds per cubic foot unless you switch it. Lightweight mixes and specialty bags can differ — read the ticket or the label when they do.
