What Is a Yard of Concrete

What Is a Yard of Concrete — clear numbers you can take to the plant or the bag aisle.

Quick answer

What Is a Yard of Concrete: a cubic yard of concrete is 27 cubic feet — picture a cube three feet on each side. It is not a square yard of sidewalk. Thickness turns area into volume, and volume is what the plant sells.

What Is a Yard of Concrete: Coverage at common thicknesses

Spread one yard at 4 inches and you cover about 81 square feet. At 6 inches, 54 square feet. At 8 inches, 40.5 square feet. That is why a driveway eats yards faster than a patio of the same length and width.

What Is a Yard of Concrete: Weight and bags in one yard

At 150 lb/ft³ a yard weighs about 4,050 lb — a little over two short tons. In bags: 45×80 lb, 60×60 lb, or 90×40 lb at standard yields. See bags in a yard and how much does concrete weigh?.

Yard vs square yard vs ton

A square yard is nine square feet of area with no thickness. A ton of concrete is roughly half a cubic yard by weight (≈0.49 yd³ at 2.025 ton/yd³). A ton of gravel is a different factor — use the gravel calculator.

Do it in Concrete Calculator

Any calculator that prints yards is showing this unit. Open the yard calculator when you already know dimensions and want the plant order rounded.

What one yard looks like on site

One yard fills a 9×9 ft area about 4 inches deep, or an 81 ft² rectangle at that thickness. It is roughly forty-five 80 lb bags stacked on two pallets with a few bags left over. It weighs as much as a small car — plan the truck path, not a pickup.

Ready-mix drivers think in yards. Bag aisles think in counts. Concrete Calculator shows both so the conversation with either supplier stays on the same pour.

One cubic yard is a 3 × 3 × 3 ft cube — the unit a ready-mix plant batches.

Why plants sell yards

Batch plants, truck capacities, and historical US practice all run on cubic yards. Metric countries sell cubic metres. Same material, different unit. Concrete Calculator shows both when it helps the ticket.

Field notes to keep handy

Measure to the outside of the forms. Convert every side to the same unit before you multiply. Apply waste after you sum every piece of the job, then round once for the plant.

Bag counts always round up because a partial bag is still a whole bag at the store. Compare that total with a delivered price when short-load fees show up on the quote.

Normal-weight planning density here is 150 pounds per cubic foot unless you switch it. Lightweight mixes and specialty bags can differ — read the ticket or the label when they do.
